Craig --

I think within your post, you explain why the branding
issue has some validity -- when you use the example of
The Byrds, for example, you are talking about a band's
progression, which can take them many places.
Ideally, a band can navigate new territory like The
Fall -- as the late John Peel eloquently put it, The
Fall are always different and always the same.

But that's not quite the case here, for all of the
reasons you note.

On that note, I'm intrigued by the upcoming dB's disc
-- based on their new tunes, Stamey and Holsapple
haven't made any effort to go back to the old sound --
each has penned material consistent with their recent
work. But their current material sounds more like a
logical progression from the old dB's, in contrast to
a lot of Chilton's solo work.

Aside - to reiterate, I like some Chilton's solo
stuff. I think Greg hit the nail on the head -- there
are a lot of times he seems indifferent or not
engaged.
