I like the new album. What it is lacking is the different feels and
moods his albums usually have. Most times he has a rocker, a pop tune,
a ballad, some sort of moody thing, a flapper song, etc. Anyone that
has any Macca album would know what I mean. This new album holds one
mood almost the whole way through. "English tea", "friends to go"
kinda pick things up, and only "fine line" and "promise to you girl"
are uptempo.
A lot of the songs are good, but I do agree that it is lacking in
variety. Oddly enough the only song I would not put in the iPod is
"jenny wren" I think it's the weakest track on the cd. His vocal melody
just follows the guitar which I find kinda dull.
I love "never happened before", the chords are very Bacharach.
One musical critique is that Macca seems to be pausing an extra measure
often between sections of the song where in the past he would go right
into the next section. Has anyone else noticed this?
As far as being disappointed with his voice... for a 63 year old guy
that smoked and screamed and generally abused his voice for years he
sounds amazingly good. Of course he can't hit the notes like he could
in his 20's and 30's, come on! Expecting him to sound like he did in
the 70's or to write songs like he did when he was a young man is
ridiculous. He is older know and kudos to him for doing an album that
reflects that.
