First, for those who are into new music, I saw Franz
Ferdinand's U.S. tour kick off last night -- here's my
take on it: http://blog.myspace.com/mrhonorama
Second -- while I agree with the folks who maintain
that McCartney should play more solo/Wings material,
does anyone expect Macca or any of his contemporaries
to go out and play a set of deep cuts? The number of
artists at any given time who can sell out arenas and
play challenging sets could be counted on one hand.
When those artists have been in the biz for over 20
years, then it's almost unheard of. Whether it's
McCartney, or the Stones or The Who, et al, you are
going to hear a lot of older staples. I suppose Bob
Dylan is a major exception, but with Dylan you have a
guy who tours much more frequently, and whose
experimental nature can often result in crappy shows.
To some degree, it can be a no win situation. Case in
point -- the Smile show last year -- a set mixing a
few hits with some deep cuts, then Smile, then an
encore/final set that was hit-after-hit. And
afterwards, some hipsters were complaining about the
encore -- he played surf songs and what not. Screw
that.
Whatever material Paulie picks, I hope he enjoys it,
is engaged in it and plays the hell out of it. I'm
finally going to see him for the first time in 29
days, and I probably won't quibble with the set list.
