Hmmm - I can just about hear Lennon saying this. I do recall reading that
he highly praised the Raspberries, in particular their recording "Overnight
Sensation". Now, I don't look at the Raspberries as mere Beatles emulators
- although there are certain songs that sound very Beatlesque, just as
others sound like they are right out of the Beach Boys and Who songbooks, I
think that in general they took the Beatles, Who, B Boys and Small Faces and
came up with their own sound. Granted a sound that pays homage to their
forebearers, but not too much IMO. Didn't the Beatles do the same thing on
their first 5 or 6 LPs?
Also, there's McCartney's mentoring of Badfinger, who were certainly
Beatle-derived. Seems like he thought they were alright.
