<< far be it of me to comment on dumb ass comments by even dumber ass
'performers', but why can't these dopes keep their mouths shut on their
own opinions when doing a fund raiser for the folks devastated by the
floods in the Gulf......to make such an idiotic comment like "President
Bush doesn't care about black people" and actually believe it? >>
I think he spoke honestly about the frustration many people are feeling, and
as some have noted, there's plenty to support the assertion (at least
circuitously--because it is more class than race, though the two are
somewhat interwoven). And besides, haven't we had this discussion before? We
expect musicians and artists to comment on relevent issues. That's one of
the things art does.
I would hardly question West's status as a "performer". He's one of the best
hip-hop producers today, his new album was co-produced by Jon Brion of all
people (really!), and while some like to dwell on his ego, his lyrics are
often sharp and incisive, self-deprecating rather than boastful. He's one of
the few mainstream rappers who not only had a middle-class upbringing but
doesn't hide it; he's truly hip-hop's everyman. His debut album was a
detailed commentary on higher education and its often broken promise of a
brighter future, and his new single is about conflict diamonds, for
crissakes! -Jason
PS: That's really too bad about the Model Rockets. I really love those
albums.
