For the Owsley fans on the list, Will contributes some
backing vocals to the new disc from Rodney Crowell,
"The Outsider."
Don't know if I'd agree with Entertainment Weekly that
the album is Crowell's "career-best" as his last one,
"Fate's Right Hand," is pretty hard to beat, but this
new one is really good...and it rocks, to boot. If you
like well-written songs, you'll find plenty here to
enjoy.

I've followed Crowell through all his highs and lows, and am disappointed
with this one, especially considering the presence of Will Kimbrough on guitar.
It reminds me a bit of Steve Earle at his shakiest: a guy who can't rock
trying to do so just the same. "Ignorance is the Enemy," the talking song with
cameos by John Prine and Emmylou Harris, is horrid.
On a more positive Kimbrough note, the new album he produced for Adrienne
Young is even better than the first one, also produced by Kimbrough. Classy
folk-pop with old-time stringband touches. If you're going to the AMA conference
in Nashville, check her out at the Station Inn. Engaging performer.
Also liking the forthcoming Marty Stuart gospel record, which is loaded with
great Kenny Vaughn guitar.
Big personal favorite: "Honeysuckle Sweet" by Jessi Alexander. The kind of
big-label "country" record that typically falls through the cracks. Soulful
singing and terrific songs, including co-writes with Al Anderson, Gary
Nicholson, Gary Louris, Austin Cunningham and Benmont Tench. This gal should be
opening shows for Tom Petty! Fans of Kim Richey, Matraca Berg and Jackie De
Shannon oughta check this out.
