Sure. The first three albums by the Mothers displayed a delicious contempt
for pop's worst excesses. "Money" in particular lampoons not only the
psychedelic ethos but also the overall sound of records of the period with
the backwards tapes, the musique concrete white noise stuff, the snippets of
Eric Clapton saying things like "Are you hung up?", a dose of avant garde
orchestral material, etc. Add to that the confrontational lyrics and a
blatant disregard for the seriousness with which pop began to view itself
with heavier and more elaborately produced commercial music and you have a
pretty sharp piece of socially relevant (and fun) commentary.

Funny thing--some of the elements I described above (backwards tapes, etc.)
could just as easily describe Pepper, but the end result is entirely
different..

As for irritating pop fans, it's not exactly a hook-laiden album with catchy
choruses. But it still managed to chart at #32. Go figure.
