Nothing wrong with that, although it was virtually custom designed to
irritate pop lovers. Zappa was one of the few people in rock who was able to
see the ridiculousness of hippie subculture and say something about it
without losing his own street credibility.
The Sgt. Pepper cover parody is a masterpiece. There's a famous story about
FZ calling to ask Paul McCartney for permission to parody the cover and
McCartney passed the buck to Sir Joe at EMI, although it was OK with Macca.
Zappa found this perplexing, as he thought that The Beatles should be the
ones who gave permission for such things. I think they got the OK, but
Verve/MGM released the parody in reverse so that the gatefold photo is
actually on the outside. Thus, the concept was basically ruined.
A lot of people thought FZ was full of venom for the Beatles, but he wasn't.
He regarded them as a very good commercial group and even performed with
John & Yoko at the Fillmore in 1971--the recording of which led to another
controversy. But that's another story...
