I have to confess that I discovered a new-found repect for DL a couple of years ago.

In the 80's they were everywhere, but in my young and snobbish ways, I always considered them 'the enemy', probably because they were so popular and they weren't the Who or the Jam. But it would be foolish and incorrect to lump them in with hair metal bands like Poison and Motley Crue, as many do.

My wife, God bless 'er, is a huge metal head, so listening to these bands is an inevitable experience. While we were living in NYC, DL played a date in '03 (or '04) at the Beacon Theater. No pyrotechnics, no special effects, just five guys on a small stage. Naturally, we had to be there.

The crowd, as you might expect, was ballistic for two hours straight, and they played all the big hits (very rarely have I heard an explosion of sound when the first chords of 'Photograph' were played). Mid-set I said to my wife, "Fer chrissakes, I'm not even a fan, and I know the words to ALL of these songs". That's a pretty powerful thing.

To their credit, they went all out and played a great two hours. You had to be a big grinch not to enjoy it, and you can hear the influences of bands that are touted on Auditees ringing thru (Bowie, the Who and BIG sounds of T. Rex).
The only exception is that song 'Love Bites', which I'll despise to my dying day, and I used the occassion to make a loo and beer run.

So, am I going to go out and buy this new DL CD? No, 'cos my wife is going to snap it up, if she hasn't already. But if Marc Bolan had survived that car crash and met some boys from Sheffield, this is what his stuff may have sounded like.

I'm outta love, outta love,
Rob

PS- the ol' lady also dragged me to the Motley Crue reunion tour at Boston's Fleet Center. In a word...sham.
Terrible musicianship, Vince Neil literally saying F or MF every other word from the stage and idiocy all around. Basically a fifteen year old's idea of a party.
