Since you asked... I actually just read all of the messages concerning Zappa
and "Money".Most of what I would add has already been mentioned.
I was into Zappa/Mothers from the very first album and bought them as they
came out.Even though Frank had some thematic material on the first 2 nothing
prepared me for "Money".It litrerally blew my mind.I though it was Frank at
his most playful, tuneful, and in some ways adventurous.I played this album
constantly.I will agree about it's hooks becausre I sang along constatly .I
never thought too deeply about it's overall theme. To me it was a musical
spoof on the La hippy scene .Yes, there is a Sgt. Pepper thing there in the
cover design and the way it ends. But to me it was a very successful
collection of great music."Who needs the Peace Corpse" is a good of example
of Frank with hooks.Who can resist it.This is a classic album!
The only other album that is like a "Musical" and is full of cool tunes is
"Broadway the Hard Way" which is a political spoof filled with catch music.
I followed his whole carreer but lean towards the original Mothers has my
favorite .I do think there is a lot of excess in the later years but I still
loved Frank and his great guitar work.
Sewart, my ex-wife loved Frank.Much to my horror, she once threw her
underwear up to the stage for his famous clothes line.Don't remember how it
came off.
I do have one Frank story.I met him at a Mothers concert at the Electric
Playground in Chicago. We discussed Varese and he suggested a couple
things. He was pretty open about popular music.Someone else asked him where
he thought music was headed. He said "in a car headed towards Laurel Canyon".
This may have been a stock reply because I think I saw it in Rolling
Stone. But I did get to hear it in person.
