Hello all:
IPO--LA has completed week one. I wanted to touch base with a couple of
other dates I caught.
7-24--After persuading my wife to eat at the kingdom of gastronomical
delight, Tommy's Hamburgers (Beverly and Rampart), we headed west to the
Joint for the afternoon IPO show. DAVE AARONOFF was engaged in a sweet
country waltz (it reminded of Costello's "Almost Blue" period) and got the
proceedings off to a good start.
SWEETNESS hailed from San Diego County's second largest city, Chula Vista.
They reminded of a cross between No Doubt and an old IPO favorite of mine,
Big Hello. They were led by a female singer with considerable stage
presence. Fun group.
AD FRANK and PAULA KELLEY both record for the Stop, Pop, and Roll label.
Paula's set, featuring the PKO (Paula Kelley Orchestra), was riveting. It
featured torch ballads and tunes with unique chord changes. Imagine Julie
London going out with Burt Bacharach on a blind date (a pretty cool vision
if you ask me) and you have the essence of Paula Kelley. Ad Frank's set
didn't do as much for me; but in fairness to the artist, he didn't have
musicians like the PKO on stage to enhance his work.
MARC DANZEISEN, who sat in earlier with Aaronoff, also delivered the goods
with his set. CORIN ASHLEY has one of those perfect pop voices. The road
began with McCartney, stopped at Emitt Rhodes house in Hawthorne and
continue its journey to the land of CVS. Ashley knocked out these incredible
Badfinger-style ballads and concluded the afternoon in splendid fashion.
People that stuck around received a free CD of Corin's work-in-progress.
Thanks Corin!
BLACK WATCH bailed on the afternoon show. Judging from the noticeable lack
of interest or concern from audience, not a crisis that will be etched in
IPO lore.
