Hi Gary,

I say that the true, number one reason that the "Real" Music Biz is in a slump is that it is managed by business men who don't seem to be music fans. When a trend setting artist comes along, some of these business types have the ability to find or groom other acts that are close in style to the trend setting artist. Then they flood the market with a bunch of soul-sucking, mediocre-to-poor imitations of the same thing, and it goes on for five to ten years until some other innovative artist breaks some new ground. Then the whole process repeats itself again. The major labels kill themselves with lack of variety.

It's like if you went to the grocery store, and all that they wanted to sell you, for five years, was peanut butter. Then all of the sudden steak swells up from the underground, and people discover it is good. Now the grocery stores drop peanut butter, and they don't offer you the chance to buy anything but steak for five years. Then rice breaks out, and they drop everything else and sell you rice for five years. (I know that this is an over-simplistic analogy, but still, it's kind of how it is.)

Then it doesn't help that a major amount of radio stations are in the same hands too. I'm kind of hoping that internet radio, and satellite radio get us around that though.

If the major labels and major radio had any sense, they'd be all over the new Pernice Brothers' album, trying to get it a wider release. It's the best release that I've heard so far in 2005. But they probably won't be all over it because nothing like the Pernice Brothers has been successful recently.

Peace,

Large

MY TOP 10 REASONS WHY THE "REAL" MUSIC BIZ IS IN A SLUMP
(with much regards to Jaimie Vee for the template!)

1) Too many remakes

2) Too many sequels

3) Too many ensemble productions without any real disc time for the

participants to make a difference to the song (stunt casting?)

4) Too much style and not enough melody

5) Too much hard drive and not enough two-inch tape

6) Too much irony and not enough naivete

7) John Lennon, Joey Ramone and Frank Zappa are dead

8) Paul McCartney, REM and Sting are still making records

9) NotLame and Jam are making BETTER records

10) The Rolling Stones are still going out on tour ;-)
