My father had an 8-track tape he used to play in the car over-and-over from
a Carpenters hits package that was a medley of this song, "Close To You",
"Superstar" and a few other tunes (I think.....it's been nearly 30 years
since I heard it last)....almost a Stars On 45 kinda thing without the
nauseating drum loop.
It was years later when I heard the full-versions of these songs that I
realized I'd been hearing a bad single edit for radio (or a bad A & R
decision....or both). Maybe the version you heard was from this bastardized
medley.
