If you're seriously curious about or interested in a band, and are willing to give 'em a chance thorugh more than one album, I suggest that you go as chronological as possible so you can follow the band's growth. And The Replacements are a superb example of a band that clearly evolves from album to album. For that reason, I'd suggest you start with "Sorry Ma..." as it's full of 2 minute songs that are punky, but also melodic. Unless, of course, you aren't comfortable with the fast & loud stuff... If you want to jump right into the brilliance, "Let It Be" is the place to start, and we know you already grabbed that up. Give it a few spins and then, if you dig it, snag "Tim" and "Pleased To Meet Me." Those are the Big 3 "must haves" of The Replacements. But the others are all good to check out, as they all offer something of interest. I even like a few tunes on "Don't Tell A Soul" (I'll Be You, Achin' To Be, They're Blind).
Personally, I'm with Steve Durben. I wouldn't suggest getting a "best of" album for this group as the regular albums are so interesting (good).
I'm also a *huge* fan of Tommy Stinson's post-'mats band, Bash & Pop. I think they only released one album ("Friday Night Is Killing Me"). I'd like to know if any of his other stuff, solo or with a band called Perfect, is worth checking out.
I hadn't heard any of Paul Westerberg's solo stuff, but the other day I heard one of his new tunes on a college station ("Trumpet something or other"?) that I thought was pretty damn good. Anyone else heard new Westerberg material?
Be seeing you,
Bill
