Rod Stewart's "American Songbook" albums are a hack version of Bryan
Ferry's thoughtful and adroitly executed "As time goes by" from 1999.
Kinda like David Bowie's generally dire "Pinups" was a rushed out copy
of Ferry's "These Foolish Things", back in 1974. Bowie's album even
came out first, but that's because Ferry took his time to do his album
right.
One recent album of covers that works, to these ears, is The Beautiful
South's new one, "Gold Diggas Head Nodders & Pholk Songs", featuring
covers from the Grease soundtrack, Blue Oyster Cult, ELO (Livin'
Thing), the Zombies (This will be our year), the Ramones (Blitzkrieg
Bop)...some nice song choices, and some inspired approaches to them.
Great booklet, too.
Richard
