As Andrea mentioned, the Fung Wah bus line is dirt cheap, but it's
extremely bare-bones, and I hear the drivers tend to have a certain
bat out of hell quality. Usually, Charity and I go via Peter Pan
(www.peterpanbus.com), which go from Port Authority to South Station
for a walk-up fare of $49 round trip, but I notice that they're
running a special through their website of $30 round trip.

Lodging is gonna be spendy no matter what you do (especially on a
summer weekend, Boston hotels ain't cheap), but if you want to go the
B&B route, I recommend the Coolidge Corner Guest House in Brookline
(www.bedandbagel.com) just because it's relatively inexpensive and
Coolidge Corner (which is about a half-mile from my house) is both
conveniently located for travel and a nice neighborhood in and of
itself. Otherwise, I'd just try Hotwire or Expedia and see if you get
lucky.
