I always thought Liberty was a great label, especally from the mid 50's
(Julie London, Martin Denny, Eddie Cochran, Sandy Nelson and the
Chipmunks) to the late 60's. They picked up or created a lot of great
subsiderary labels like Imperial, Aladdin, Sue, Minit, Pacific Jazz,
Blue Note, Soul City and Dolton along the way too.
The first Liberty single I bought was the Ventures classic "Hawaii
Five-O" in 1969 (second grade!). It's a shame when Transamerica bought
them in 1968 Liberty and its various labels they were later "folded"
into the United Artists label (much in the way MCA buried Decca, Kapp,
UNI).
When Capitol-EMI bought UA, they revived the Liberty label for a short
time in 1980-83 because they couldnt use the United Artists trademark.
Most of those artists later became EMI-America artists. Capitol tried to
revive Liberty again as a country label in the mid 90's with limited
success..
