Thing is, when "one hit wonders" are discussed by folks outside the circles
of hyperfans like us (some call us geeks, but Grampa Cafarelli woulda smiled
and called us "ent'usiasts" in between sips of anisette), the one hit is rarely
defined by Billboard charts or similar arbiters of what was # 1 then and # 1
now; for most people, the one hit is the one song he or she and his/her friends
remember from, y'know, back in the day. The Knack are a one-hit wonder in
these terms; "Good Girls Don't" and "Baby Talks Dirty" charted, but the public
only remembers "My Sharona." The Romantics are a one-hit wonder, but their
one "hit"--"What I Like About You," of course--missed the Top 40 entirely,
while their highest-charting hit, "Talking In Your Sleep," is rarely mentioned,
and their other Top 40 hit, "One In A Million," is largely forgotten. It's not
accurate, sure, but that's the way most people seem to look at it.
