hm. well, technically, everything i know about the
show i learned on audities, so there is the distinct
possibility that i'm talking out my ass. Perhaps where
I understood "one hit" the real definition is just
"has-been." (or, perhaps in Tiffany's case, "have new
music and want exposure".)

on the other hand, i wouldn't argue with the
Loverboy/multiple hits defense, or for Stewart's
bananarama/falco inclusion: my original point was
mostly that hall and oates didn't fall into that
category at all, not only charting numerous times but
with several number ones...but i did sort of just
start meandering down my personal recollection of
one-hitters from that era, which is probably not
representative since I was, you know, like 12. But
the distinction i make in my little world is between
those i remember as mega-super-ultra-charters of that
period (phil collins, h&o, police, madonna, duran
duran, cyndi lauper, prince, michael jackson, lionel
ritchie, bon jovi and the like) and those whose
success rested pretty much on the one or two songs
that you can drum up in you memory now, if you think
long enough, and if you weren't a huge fan of theirs
to begin with (or a diligent follower of the musical
world even then, which i was not.)

i see your logical rings and i raise you one
circuitous subjectivity!

more firestorm fodder from my personal
one-to-two-hitter files:
 - a-ha (sure, sun always shines on TV, blatantly
ripped off by U2, but who plays that now even on the
80s radio formats?)
 - cutting crew (you Canadians will know better)
 - night ranger (don't tell me you love me is one of
my favorite karaoke songs ever, sad to say)
 - escape club
 - scritti politti
 - spandau ballet
 - the weather girls
 - josie cotton
 - tracey ullman (okay, might be cheating)

defend!
