I'm not sure what was meant by "fringe-of-mainstream" in that context,
whether they were talking about actual fringe artists (of which there
are plenty on eMusic) or about bands that are on the edge of
mainstream acceptance (with the recent addition of the Merge label,
along with Matador, K, Kill Rock Stars, Bar/None, Restless and many
other large and well-known indies, there's plenty of those as well).
Add in nearly the entirety of the Fantasy catalogue (literally
hundreds of classic jazz releases from the Fantasy, Riverside and
Pablo labels, plus Big Star, CCR, and those Stax/Volt records not
owned by Atlantic) and the recent addition of the Sun Records
catalogue and...well, I've got an old deal that they only offered to
people who switched over after their elimination of unlimited
downloads, 300 tracks for $50 a month. I *never* have leftover tracks
at the end of the billing cycle.
