You know, I always kind of wondered the same thing
about James Taylor's mexico - "lose your load..." etc.
 I deem it some old blues or C&W  (or both) trope that
got recycled by later popsters.  


And re: making up lyrics; why, I had my 15 minutes
early, famous in my 8th grade class for secretly
disseminating alternate lyrics to "We Are the World"
retitled "we are the girls", to be sung at our
graduation ceremony, involving how we were opting to
save our social lives by going to a public high
school.  I think only me and my friend Gretchen
actually sang the wrong words, but we derived a
disproportionate amount of glee from the occasion.

Viva le resistance!
