Has anyone been fortunate enough to catch Architecture in Helsinki on their 2nd US tour?
They played a very enjoyable show here in Grand Rapids,Michigan to an audience of around (I'm guessing)175 or so which is quite a good showing since we have been under tornado watches here since around 2pm . We had torrential microbursts throughout the late afternoon and into the evening which caused the cancellation of our Festival of the Arts which ruined my 7 year old daughter's day as she was scheduled to perform with her ballet group on an outdoor stage a few minutes after the monsoonlike conditions blew into town...anyway...
Architecture in Helsinki performed a spirited set that lasted around an hour and a half and consisted primarily of material off their In Case We Die cd ( they played basically everything but Rendezvous) with a smattering of songs from Fingers Crossed- their 1st full release (the Owls Go,Like A Call (great version!) Scissors Paper Rock and Fumble) and they closed with an inspired cover of Roxy Music's Love Is the Drug.
For those unfamiliar with AIH ,picture Belle and Sebastian crossbred with Bis or Le Tigre but not as abrasive..that ..is this is an Australian octet (5 men and 3 women) playing an assortment of instruments including but not limited to drums, bass, guitar, keybords, xylophone, tambourine, cowbell and many other percussive instruments,Moogs, melodica, trombones, trumpets, tuba, flute, recorder and many more mxing a symphonic chamber-pop sound with electronic punk. They rock out a lot more this time around than they did last year when i saw them.
Their in-between song moments still resemble a Chinese firedrill as many members move to a different instrument after each song. It is quite treat to behold and if you are in Detroit they are playing the Magic Stick tomorrow night.
