I think the explanation is that early on, before David was cast (and
even a little bit after), the producers thought everyone in the family
should lip-sync, but David insisted he could sing, which he
demonstrated. But on a couple of the early shows, the vocals aren't his
(it's the Bahler brothers, who continued to do most of the
backgrounds), due to tight deadlines and pre-existing recorded
material, the stuff used to sell the show to the network, one supposes.
Obviously, they didn't think that casting actual singers was much of a
concern.
