Yes it is about his car, but like you I really don' care. 
That opening line you qouted is all I need to hear to get 
lost in the song and like you as well, hear it with my 
own little spin. 
 A quick story, one year driving back from Florida I had
put that song on one of the mix CDs I used to make 
for long trips (pre iPOD days), and in a long lonely stretch
of 95 the song came on. Wife and kids sound asleep, I hit the 
repeat button and listened to the song 15 times. Never tired
of it, and can still listen to it over and over.
