A friend of mine, also from Flint, accompanied me on a trip thumbward one 
Xmas when we were home visiting family and going quietly insane. Thus did 
Bad Axe seem positively promising as a clear-the-head destination. He 
snapped the pic when we stopped to check out the pier. 

I say :
I will hazard a guess that the pier is either Port Austin (at the very tip of the "thumb") or Port Sanilac which is a bit south east of Bad Axe.
A unique feature of this area is the shallowness of Lake Huron. We walked out to the end of the pier and saw people with their dogs wading in waist high waves . Quite unusual considering that if you were to do the same thing on the west side of the state (where i am from) you would be in around 20 feet of water.
