I thought it might offend the power pop fans for having called it Jazz.
Guess I was wrong.
Tin-eared? No.
Just intolerant of pretentiousness passing as talent. I've listened to and
enjoy any jazz that has a modicum of melody. And being a bass player, I
consider running scales a pale substitute for creative performance. To
wit...Oscar Peterson's bass player. He may have history on his side (having
played with the master some 30+ years)....but the guy walks all over
everything Peterson does. It would be the equivalent to having Flea and
Billy Holiday working together as a duo. There'd be a struggle for supremacy
when what the SONGS need is for Holiday to be the predominant talent.
Bass players should be FELT and not heard....which is why drums are
essential to the rhythm equation no matter what genre you're performing in
because they and the bass create a dynamic of groove.
Anyway....sorry to the list for the digression.
