Ok, (excluding Sonny & Cher & Ringo) my favorite examples:
The vocal on Gale Garnett's "We'll Sing In The Sunshine"
The flute solo on Mamas & Papas' "California Dreaming"
The flute solo on The Troggs' "Wild Thing"
All badly and consistently off-key
I had thought it was possibly because in olden days they often had to link up and synchronize multiple tape machines to add tracks, and that sometimes there would be a speed difference between two tape machines that resulted in a tuning problem.
It does amaze me that these were deemed as passable in such GREAT songs.
