Power pop is far from the only type of music that can
be slammed for uninvolving lyrics. A recent example,
for me, is Interpol. While I enjoyed their fresh take
on the post-punk sound, their empty faux-meaningful
lyrics actually detract from their splendid sound. To
make big important sounding music and attach to it
nonsense pronouncements takes the air out of the
music.
Michael,
I think Interpol is an excellent example. It immediately brings to mind Joy
Division and New Order.Neither was known for it's lyrics as poetry. but
they certainly knew how to color these lyrics with interesting
music.Groundbreaking in it's use of dance music, which is a whole other
subject. While their lyrics are very simple they meet the music beautifuly
and it works. And that creates the hooks that make especially New Order so
catchy.Interpol, in trying to capture this sound ultimately fails to do so
as well.
