Back in the late '70s, I worked at the Fairmont Hotel pharmacy in San
Francisco. Whenever new shows opened at the Venetian Room, the
performers would come through the drugstore (doubled as the liquor
store). I met Frank Gorshin there. He must have been about 5'7" at the
most.
The first time he came in he was alone and hung out for a little while
to talk with Joseph "Pharmacist to the Stars". Frank was a friendly guy,
quick with a smile and a quip. I told him how much I loved his
impersonations, Kirk Douglas especially---and I told him I was a comics'
fan and that I loved his take on the Riddler.
I asked him if he had any signed photos available. So the next day he
came back (it was a dark day for the Venetian), he came in with two
shaved-headed guys who must have each been 6'2", maybe more, decked out
in full motorcycle leather. That's when he pulled out the photo and
signed it "Thanks for asking---Frank Gorshin". Good guy.
That's my brush with fame story for today. Then there was Robert Goulet
and Carole Lawrence...
