I guess country music has its good and bad lyricists like any other genre.
I'm not a huge country music fan, but I have Hank Williams 40 greatest hits
on CD and I find his words plain-speaking, witty, punchy and memorable.

Costello ..... hmmmm ..... he's a clever man and he can write punning
couplets, yet sometimes I find his lyrics so self-consciously "smart-ass"
for my liking. I also think that his tunes have been on a downward spiral
since "Trust", but that's another argument. To be fair, he did prompt me
to think of one of my favourite mis-quotings of a lyric: when I heard a
Johnny Monaco cover of "No Action", Johnny sang "... When I hold you like I
hold that baker's light in my hands". Baker's Light? Which baker would
that be then, Johnny?

I like lyrics kept fairly simple - one of my fave songs is still "I Don't
Care" by The Ramones. Do a search on Google and find out just how simple
the lyrics for that song are.
