For me, it was hearing Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run". I lived outside
of Madison, WI at the time, and the UW college station was one of the stations that
got an early copy; no labels actually on the vinyl, so the DJ playing it on their
10pm showcase show didn't even know which side was the A-side; he actually
played the B-side first.
Anyway, my bedtime was 10, but I would turn on a small radio sometimes to
catch interesting music. My best friend had an older brother, and we'd listen to
his records mostly just to be cool and say we were checking out Jethro Tull or
Pink Floyd, but I was starting to catch the bug. But the light turned on full blast
when I heard the huge guitars, overdubbed over and over again (not that I had a clue
it was done that way), the wall of sound they produced on the title track, and
the stories of tramps, "Roy Orbison playing for the lonely, hey that's me and I want
you only", and the wailing sax...it was all over right then and there. And that record
never sounded as good as it did coming out of that little transistor...
