It was when I was about 11, probably '63 or so, and I saw something on TV involving Pete Seeger and the Weavers, and I realized: 4 string banjo (like dixieland as played as Disneyland), bad; 5 string, good. It was different and I reverberated like a sympathetic string rings chromatically; then actually learning to travis pick completed the life-change. And then of course (I say “of course” but you young whippersnappers wouldn't understand) the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, but I don't think the Beatles would have done it to me the same way if I hadn't been shot through the ears by Pete Seeger first.

Here's a thread that may or may not fly... Your first MAJOR musical experience... You know... the ONE that made your mind up for you that Rock/Pop was here to stay in your life for as long as you lived...

Mine was back in 1964 (yes, that old)... Friend shows up with a portable record player (you remember the kind... the ones that had nails for needles)... He also has an album under his arm... My mom finds us an extension cord and tells us to go to the backyard to listen as to not disturb in the house with the music... He flashes the album cover at me and asks... "Have you heard these guys?"... There before me was a dark blueish cover of four guys, their faces half-shadowed... So incredibly different from all the Chubby Checker and Fabian record covers that my sister had... and that name!... so weird... "The Beatles?"... "Pop Combo from England?"... Sure let's listen... First chords of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"... and the rest is history... One night I'll never forget and to this day lives with me... Little did I know...

Cheers,

Miguel
