I'll play.
I grew up listening to good stuff, mostly my parent's music that they
played for me (the foundations of good taste, I assure you), and I
think I was about 16 when I finally branched out into my own. Yes, I
spent a LONG time listening to The Bee Gees and Simon and Garfunkel
when all my peers were into New Kids on the Block. And yes, I
listened to that stuff, but mostly when I was with friends. I never
owned any of their stuff. And on the radio, I listened to the AAA
stations. I was an odd child.
Anyway, so at 16, I discovered U2 and Counting Crows... I stepped
into that side of things for a while (still love those bands of
course) but it was a brief into into modern rock music...
Then when I was 17, "Underground" from Ben Folds Five came out and I
was never quite the same. Tucson had the most amazing station at the
time, and I was so lucky to hear Flaming Lips, Fountains of Wayne, Ben
Folds Five, etc. So yeah, it was Ben Folds Five that changed my life.
I got to college and I went nutso with the music, I was like a
starving animal or something. I was simply voracious I joined the
college radio station and the club that brought concerts to town. .
I think the 1st 2 years of college I purchased close to 1000 CDs or
something. Maybe more. I had joined the Armchair (Ben Folds Five
list) and someone told me about Jellyfish, so I bought Spilt Milk and
fell in love and joined the Jelly-L. From there, I discovered that
this music I enjoyed so much had a NAME - "powerpop" and there was
this whole group of people that actually enjoyed it and talked about
it on a little mailing list called "audities."
So I got myself an education in music and joined audities and now 6
years later, here I am.
I can't tell you the many ways in which that little song by Ben Folds
Five changed my life. The friends I made, my HUSBAND for goodness
sake, my new job and career, the hundreds of dollars I've spent at
shows, and I think I own over 2000 CDs by now...
I used to blast that song from my crappy car speakers. Yep, it pretty
much changed my life.
