This really annoyed me too in the cinema with Bridget Jones. Really
crass and overly literal choices of music simply designed to sell
soundtrack albums and add nothing to the film.

I find the mixing on all DVD's a pain. I'm always concerned about
annoying the neighbours with my loud TV so constantly sit with the
remote and adjust the sound accordingly. We watch almost everything
with subtitles now. I always put it down to nothing being mixed for
plain stereo now but instead assuming you have a multi speaker home
cinema setup. This means that all the dialogue is mixed to the edges
of the sound picture and the sound effects and music to the middle (?)
meaning that on my 2 speaker setup the dialogue is lost and the
effects are overly loud. TV stuff is mixed for a 2 speaker setup hence
it's not too much of a problem when watching this.

This problem isn't limited to DVD's I don't think. I find a lot of
films in the cinema overly loud too.
