Dude! I totally WAS in the KISS Army when I was eight;
it was my second grade birthday present from my sister
Eileen. I had a cool iron-on patch and a red t-shirt
with the sparkly decal picture from the cover of
Destroyer that I wore until it was invisible. I
craved boots with fangs. I listened to "Love Guns"
without understanding a thing they were talking about.
I used to trail along after her to WaxTrax and look at
the BOC and Molly Hatchet album covers with
trepidation and desire. It was only a few years later,
when I encountered Cheap Trick, Spinal Tap, and Queen
that I began to suspect the joke was on me, and that
popmetal was not going to keep me entertained for my
whole life.
(Maybe THAT's why I was so grossed out by the whole
80s metal deal: yawn. That was, like, SO 5th grade.)
Still, it is pretty entertaining. And wicked fun to
karaoke...nothing hips folks to your musical
schizophrenia like busting out some Judas Priest after
you've glazed everyone over with the entire 7 minutes
of "Scenes from An Italian Restaurant."
viva la difference!
