Boo hoo wah. Number one, fucking brilliant set of commercials, one of
the best marriages of music and images I've ever seen in advertising.
(Not surprising, since the guy who made the commercials -- he's the
young guy sitting at the computer putting the photo frames around his
neck while he's singing along to the song -- first came up with the
concept while he was listening to the song. This wasn't
focus-grouped, it was Kinks fan's idea that he ran with.) Number two,
I'm sure it's put rather a large chunk of change into Raymond Douglas
Davies' bank account, and if you love the guy so much, then why do you
begrudge him making a little money to leave the grandkids?
Number three, and most importantly: I lurk on a couple of message
boards devoted to advertising and commercials, because I used to work
for an ad agency and I've maintained an interest over the years.
(Heck, my wife and I go to annual showings of the year's best UK
television ads at the MFA, and that night's program is usually one of
the most entertaining things I see all year!) You would be shocked at
the number of people I've seen on these boards posting some variation
on "What's that terrific song on the HP ads?," followed 12 to 48 hours
later by, "Okay, I went and bought this THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION
SOCIETY record! Wow, it's really good!" I mean, I lost count at a
couple dozen.
So. Because of those ads, there are at least two dozen more fans of
THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY. I'm really failing to see
what it is about that which would piss you off so much, unless it's
just that you're upset that it's not your little pocket album that
nobody else knows about anymore.
Could be -- that's certainly why so many people were so pissed off by
the "Pink Moon" VW ad.
