Hey guys--maybe one of you knows something about this. There's a CD out on Sony that I want to buy (Elkland), but it contains newest-generation copy protection software. I really don't like dealing with this shit (and am in the middle of a personal boycott against ANY discs--mostly BMG--that contain sunncomm-style copy protection--DO NOT BUY THEM) but was curious if it basically just doesn't work at all (like most copy protection) or if it has certain limitations or if you can't even rip it. I absolutely refuse to pay for a CD if I can't copy it to play in my ipod. The album is available on itunes for the same price as Newbury is charging, but I'd prefer to get the CD version if the CP doesn't really work. This is a new generation of Sony copy protection technology and it's only been in use for a few months, tops--has anyone bought any American-released Sony discs recently?

Interestingly enough, while googling about this, I found that just a few months ago Sony decided to ditch copy protection on their Japanese and EU releases because of "a rise in awareness amongst consumers", which tells me that they got smart enough to not buy that crap anymore. Seems weird that only a couple months later they're ramping up an attempt to copy-protect ALL of their American output by the end of 2005. --Jason
