BTW, the best $10 bucks I spent this year was to attend IPO Chicago Friday
night. I got to see Off Broadway again after about twenty-five years. I
can't describe in words the experience - they are certainly one of the best
bands around. Unbelievable dual guitars and Cliff Johnson's voice is
powerful. I was unprepared for the stage antics - they put on a very
humorous show. They did three Beatles covers and the phenomenal return
encore of "Eddie's Pals". The first generation power pop bands have the
original recipe, and are special.>>>

Sorry I missed it. I was in the Chicago vicinity for the weekend, but my
ride was sick on Friday so I went Saturday instead. Not that Saturday was
THAT bad -- there were some highlights, such as the Fuglees ending their set
with "Get The F@#k Off The Stage, You Sons Of Bitches" while members of the
audience pelted them with marshmallows; or the all-out non-stop
3-guitar/drums neo-British invasion/Romantics rave-up of Muck and the Mires
(lousy name, great female drummer); or the manic vibe and hip grinding
appeal of the Goldstars, complete with go go dancers front stage... But all
in all I had hoped for a special ChIPO night, like the Not Lame night at the
Abbey 2 years ago -- and Saturday night was NOT it, IMO. Sounds like Friday
was. Drat!

Saturday night was a pretty good show, with the aforementioned Fuglees, Muck
and the Mires, and Goldstars all being standouts, as was the very solid
'mats-y stylings of the Breakup Society. Still, I'd agree that it fell a
little short of transcendent when compared to the previous evening. But how
could it not? It's a little unfair to compare the live performances of even
very good power pop bands to an act like Off Broadway that has close to
three decades' worth of chops and showmanship and a time-tested catalog upon
which to draw.
