Hey all, someone gave me the new Neil Young Greatest Hits CD/DVD combo pack. The DVD, on initial inspection, is pretty much the same audio tracks as the CD with some extras, such as 2 promo videos, subtitles, etc. I have played the DVD disk on my home DVD player, but I don't have a multimedia amp/receiver, so I don't know what the difference is between the audio on the CD and the audio on the DVD and the package doesn't provide much information other than a message that the user should really listen to the DVD audio tracks for the best sound. The DVD audio does indeed sound good, but perhaps someone on the list who is more knowledgeable on the differences could inform me what they are.
Anyway, what is kind of cool about playing the DVD disk is that there is a corresponding 'video' for each audio track that is simply a shot of turntable playing the original track from the original album. For both 'Ohio' and 'Old Man', the original 45rpm single is played. I can only assume there never was a vinyl release of 'Freedom', as the corresponding video for 'Rockin' In The Free World' shows a spinning Freedom CD on a CD player that appears to have been taken apart to expose its internal mechanism.
It's kind of like watching one of those hokey videos of a fire burning in a fireplace, but it is also a bit of kick to see the cool Reprise label--the orange one with the river boat--spinning around on a turntable, particularly for those of us who remember playing the original vinyl versions.
Jeesh....I sound old.
