I've done a lot of work with children and music over the years. I've found
that kids are naturally musical and given the opportunity to hear music
performed live and perhaps the chance to handle the tools of the trade, they
respond intuitively. What you're into depends on your environment.

Fortunately, I grew up in an environment where music was a part of our daily
diet. For most people, music is a lifestyle choice like a brand or designer.
Those of us who appreciate music on a more esoteric level have a difficult
time relating to people for whom music is mere sonic wallpaper. So I'm not
so harsh on what kids listen to today. They will hopefully have long lives
ahead of them to discover wonderful things should they choose to.

I've often marveled at the age we live in. Just think about it: We have,
available at our fingertips, more access to more kinds of music than at any
time in history. A growing percentage of our culture is meticulously
restored, preserved and put on the market where anyone can have it. We
haven't seen the full cultural effect of this phenomena yet, but one can
only hope.

Anyway, I wrote an editorial this week that sort of fits in to this whole
thing:
