Hi Everyone,
After a month of trying to put together three festivals simultaneously as
well as having major computer issues, I'm finally back to posting! I had a
chance to read the posts that took place right after IPO Nashville, in which
some people aired their feeling that the communal vibe of IPO has greatly
diminished ever since the festival has been expanded to several different
cities. I am hoping that this year's IPO Liverpool can possibly bring some
of that sense of community back, because:
a. It's 5 days long, rather than the more typical IPO length of 10-17 days
b. all the shows have free admission
c. each day will feature shows at at least two and as many as five venues,
all of which are within about 200 feet of each other
d. IPO Liverpool is now part of the prestigious Mathew Street Festival,
which also includes Beatle Week, for which thousands of people from around
the world attend! In fact, the name of the festival will be International
Pop Overthrow at the Mathew Street Festival.
The dates of IPO Liverpool are Thursday May 26-Monday, May 30, which is
perfect for the UK because it coincides with their Bank Holiday of May 30
and perfect for the US because that same Monday is Memorial Day. Flights
are not too expensive, especially if you're travelling from the eastern part
of the US and, although I can't say this from personal experience, I'm told
the beer is much better in the UK than it is in the US! Also, my girlfriend
and I stay at a pretty good hotel called The Campanile, which is situated in
the Albert Docks section of Liverpool, right on The Mersey. It's about a
15-20 minute walk from Mathew Street, and it's clean, comfortable, and best
of all, very cheap. The standard price for rooms is about £45 (which
translates to about $85 U.S.), which is extremely reasonable for what you're
getting. If you want to book rooms at The Campanile, you should do it over
the phone at 01144 151 709 8104, because if you try to book weekend rooms
there via the web, it reads "not available" for some strange reason.
If The Campanile doesn't suit your needs, you can try The Sir Thomas, which
is a bit more expensive but also a bit closer to The Cavern. You can check
out a bunch of Liverpool hotels at
http://www.hotelqueste.co.uk/uk/merseyside/liverpool
Below my signature you'll find the current schedule (subject to change, of
course), which features 120 bands; some of whom you'll recognize, some you
won't, but all are really good!
Hopefully many Auditeers will be able to make it, as I think it's going to
be something really special!
