I actually tend to think you're right. It feels VERY much like that kind
of record. 

And Bruce - that analogy works perfectly. I tend to find myself on the
outside when George and Pete sing thusly. I'm really too secular for
this pop music, aren't I?!

I think this is the classic "sinner reborn" effect - the swing of the
pendulum way back to the other side (see "Slow Train Coming").

I'll bet he finds a middle ground next time and works in more metaphor
and allusion than straight sing-it-in-church lyrics.

Or I could be completely full of shit.
