Thanks to Bob Hutton, John Ashfield, Jeffrey Glenn, Dave Seaman, and Bill
Douglas for responding.  John and Jeffrey nailed it, I think.  To answer Bob's
question, yes, all tracks were number one on either the US or UK charts (or
both).  I hadn't realized that the two sides of a double-A 45 could have
different chart positions, at least before Fall 1969, but I guess that's
because of the airplay component of the Billboard chart.
