The Brian Wilson thing was pure serendipity. Thanks to the fact that I brought
a reliable digital recording device and knew how to operate it, I wound up at
a table at the Four Seasons with a prominent Boston-based music journalist,
seated across from Brian Wilson and Van Dyke Parks while he interviewed them
about Smile. It was really enjoyable, and utterly surreal. Someone told me
that if you find yourself in the right place at the right time at SXSW, you
can experience something truly memorable. I guess they were right!

As for Ida - they're one of my faves too, and they were astounding... whenever
I was able to hear their gorgeous, shimmering harmonies above the
slightly-too-chatty crowd. I was glad to see the club was packed, but I think
an overcrowded bar is probably the wrong place in which to see them (it was my
first time seeing them live). I think they'd be better to see in a
sit-down-and-shut-up venue rather than a stand-up-and-drink one. :)

Other highlights for me: the Barsuk/Merge Records day party, particularly the
Long Winters set featuring the duo of John Roderick and Sean Nelson (of Harvey
Danger), who joked that it was "their Central Park." And Steven Malkmus & the
Jicks at Parish last night were amazing -- Malkmus somehow fits music and
lyrics together so perfectly that he creates an entirely unique sound, and
really stands apart from the din of all the other indie rock bands out there.

Tonight: my hometown boys the Unbusted at the Pecan St. Alehouse (they've been
sleeping in a van for two days, I gotta go represent), Aimee Mann at Stubbs,
Ed Harcourt at Antone's, and then more Barsuk fun with Nada Surf at Red Eyed
Fly to cap off the evening.

WHEW.
