Hey Folks,

Just wondering if David & I are the only two who attended the festivities this year. I can only comment on the night I played, so I will.

Sat. the 12th of March

The Valley Downs hit stage at 8:00 pm. They were tight and rocked. Kind of like a mix of Blondie/Pretenders w/an updated edge.

I went on next. The Four was reduced to one, since only my drummer could make the journey. I don't feel comfortable commenting on my own set. Though I will say, opening w/Nesmith's/Monkees "The Kind Of Girl I Could Love," definitely got the audiences attention. I had a lot of fun.

Mark Johnson did an acoustic trio w/bassist and boom box drums. His sound was the most muffled of the whole evening. Which is strange, since the End's soundman, Brad, did a fantastic job on everyone else. A lot of Mark's tunes had that root's/Americana thing going on. Lot's of Buddy Holly, which of course I love.

Will Kimbrough was really good. Solo acoustic w/tunes reminiscent of Tilbrook/Squeeze and Neil Finn. His playing was very much in the order of Lindsey Buckingham. A really good guitarist.

Sorry to say missed most of Cherry Blossom Clinic, as I had to go see my friend Billy Block do his set across town. They were really LOUD!

Got back just in time to hear Walter Egan's "Magnet & Steel." Sounded great. Ending w/dueling guitar solos between Walter & Bill Lloyd. Kind of like Bruce and Miami Steve back in the day.

Bill Lloyd's set was loose and engaging. Again a great guitarist. "Cool & Gone," great tune about the music business and how fleeting popularity is. Highlight of his set was seeing Al Kooper play keys. Al also did a tune, which was another commentary on how much the music business has changed. "Run by pimps and whores." I'm not going to touch that one...

The beer had pretty much taken over by this point, so everything was kind of a blur. Had a wonderful time. Very supportive scene. The people at the End were great. In particular, Stacy and Brad.

Thanks David. Let's do it again next year.

Best,

Barry Holdship
