Is anyone else a fan of Blue Oyster Cult's Agents of Fortune album? I
remember liking it a lot as a teenager, and picked it up in CD form
recently. What a revelation, it didn't age poorly - in fact, I think it's
great! Not at all gothic sludge metal as one might guess by BOC's long hair
and leather image, and sci fi/horror song titles and album art -- actually,
the songs are really rather pop. Very good melodies, harmonies, catchy
choruses, and a good mix of jangle and power chords. Each and every song is
good if not great, from the riff rock/catchy chorus of ETI to the glam rock
Tattoo Vampire to the classic Don't Fear the Reaper (which IMO initiated a
whole sub species of power pop). As for the instrumentation: there are the
expected bass/drums/electric guitars, but there's also a healthy dose of
piano, organ, strings (synth), acoustic guitar, percussion, female backing
vocals, effects, etc. throughout the disc. Especially keyboards. Highly
recommended.
I don't have any of their other albums - can anyone suggest any? How is the
followup, Spectres?
