Hi all,
Awhile back I put this up for discussion on Chalkhills and got a few
bites.Let's see what you guys think.
I grew up buying vinyl at the local record shop (I even bought a few
45's, but they were essentially done by that point). I moved to South
Dakota in the fall of '89 and when I came home to Chicago and went to
Rolling Stone Records the whole store had gone over to CD's. Horrors! I
didn't even own a player. Even then the music business people were (and
had been for a number of years) whining about how home recording, then
dubbing onto audio cassettes, was killing music. I even have albums with
a skull and crossbones on the inner sleeve warning me of the penalties
and costs of taping. Little did they know!
I'm sure that at this point record executives would gladly settle for
the amount of illegal copying that vinyl and tapes entails. So, my
modest proposal to the record industry is this: Go back to vinyl! The
artwork is better, the sound is better, and best of all they're not as
durable. Keep digital downloads for another revenue stream and you might
even sell an album twice to the same person. Sure, you can put an album
on CD but it's pretty involved or entails buying a fairly expensive
piece of hardware.
