i'm not quite sure i follow your logic here. it seems to me that the
need to buy cds is the consumerist impulse. being happy just to have the
music as a digital file makes you simply a music fan in my book. which i
think is a good thing.
a lot of my recent favorite records are ones that i found first as
digital files: the singles that were eventually collected on norwegian
dance-pop singer annie's amazing "anniemal," mia/diplo's "piracy funds
terrorism," gwen stefani's "love. angel. music. baby.," sharon jones and
the dap-kings' "naturally." i eventually got most of 'em on cd because,
well, i've got a consumerist/collector impulse myself. i didn't get the
mia/diplo record on cd 'cause it doesn't exist in that format, at least
not legally, and frankly i can't tell the difference. i've still got the
music and it still makes he happy and i can still dance to it.
