Are you looking to go historical on their butts? Lawrence Bergreen has two excellent books-- one a biography of Louis Armstrong, one a bio of Irving Berlin. Both did an awful lot to shape American 20th century popular music. Also I've always loved Chuck Berry's autobiography; it reads like one long Chuck Berry song.
