I was at that First Avenue show, too! And I also preferred World Party.
One that springs to mind for me: Sam Phillips and Buffalo Tom opening for
Counting Crows. Counting Crows were putting us to sleep within a few
songs, so we left.
I also paid good money to see Idlewild open for Pearl Jam and didn't stick
around.
